Let’s face it, every startup, entrepreneur, or even wannarepreneur needs a pick me up sometimes. A reminder or visual representation of what their journey has been like up until now or what the future can entail. 

Movies can help mirror our own lives and experiences and give us a fresh perspective on a familiar problem. Since there are so many movies to watch for startups, from inspirational success stories to cringe-worthy downfalls, we took the liberty of listing the eight movies we as a team love to look back on. 

Even if you’ve watched some or all of these movies and whether you’re in your pre-seed stage, expansion stage, or even on the verge of burnout, it’s sometimes vital to take a step back and be reminded of how someone else’s story unfolded.

This captivating story based on Michael Lewis’s nonfiction book with the same name takes us back to the subprime mortgage crisis between 2007-2010. Grab your popcorn and sit down for an excellent portrayal of how a problem can be turned into an opportunity. 

- The Social Network (7.7 on IMDB) 

This Academy Award winner is an exquisite reflection, and a good reminder of how creating a global, social phenomenon can have its ups and downs. 

- The Wolf of Wall Street (8.2 on IMDB) 

Martin Scorsese’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort lies in the gray area between “too much” and “not enough.” If you ever feel like re-evaluating your views on capitalism, this should be your go-to movie. 

- Steve Jobs (7.2 on IMDB) 

The 2015 biopic of Steve Jobs is an essential souvenir that proves even the man who revolutionized technology and communication is made up of flesh, blood, and feelings.  

- Fyre (7.2 on IMDB) 

This one, although it came out in recent years, has become a classic in its kind. The documentary provides a behind-the-scenes look at what was supposed to be the most lavish party the world has yet to see—a must-watch for the most significant representation of what not to do when you’re doing business. 

- Erin Brokovich (7.4 on IMDB)

Yes, fixation isn’t always good, but sometimes it can have beneficial results for the environment like it did in this legal drama. 

- Thank You for Smoking (7.6 on IMDB) *This is a friendly reminder that smoking is bad for your health

While showing both sides of the coin, this dark comedy adaptation dwells on spinning the truth and makes you question the limits of ethics. 

- The Pursuit of Happyness (8.0 on IMDB) 

Based on the actual and inspirational story of Chris Gardner, this tear-jerker shows early-stage entrepreneurs how perseverance and passion can open so many doors.
